Inspiration of the Month

anne

When did you start Pilates and what inspired you to start? I have only been practicing Pilates since November 2013.  I had tried fitness classes and different types of yoga but never really found my niche.  An avid runner and self-described “gym-rat,” I really wanted something that would complement my usual work outs.  Pilates forced me to slow down and to balance my mental AND physical needs.

What benefits have you seen by committing to a regular Pilates practice? It’s surprising how many times I consider Pilates each day.  From my posture while sitting at my desk in the office, to feeling more strength in my legs and core on my long runs, and even just remembering to breathe, Pilates is really improving all aspects of my life.

Do you have a favorite exercise or piece of equipment (or both)?
My absolute favorite piece of equipment is the Chair. It’s small but packs a mighty work out!

What would you say to someone thinking about starting Pilates? It’s funny because I probably sound like a broken record to my friends and family because I’ve been recommending Pilates to everyone since I started.  It’s a great addition to your traditional cardio and weight training programs- the perfect combination of core work and mindfulness.  I even got my husband (a personal trainer up in Cedar Rapids) to come with me to a recent Saturday morning class. He loved the class  (and our classmates) and is definitely coming back!

Pilates Inspiration of the Month – Sandy Schaefer

When did you start Pilates and what inspired you to start?

I started Pilates in July 2013 to improve movement and strengthen core muscles.

What benefits have you seen by committing to a regular Pilates practice?

I have issues with my back. Pilates is helping to increase my ability to strengthen these muscles.

Why did you decide to do the 2014 Empower Your Body Challenge?

I started the Challenge so that I would begin a regular exercise and diet program.  With the e-mails, weekly goals, and class requirement I am getting into good practices. I also liked the ability to participate in unlimited classes.

What was your favorite part about the Challenge?

I am getting 6-8 classes in a week. I have started jump board, very fun! I am going to try ball mat class this week. I make a weekly schedule so I have planned in cardio time so I get it done.

Do you have a favorite exercise or piece of equipment (or both)?

I really enjoy the tower. I feel that it has helped me the most. I move easier with the tower and am able to get up into teaser position now.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing Pilates?

I know that it took time for me to get into a Pilates program, but I am really finding that it is helping my movement and my spirit. All the instructors are so accommodating to my limitations and offer modifications which encourage me to keep working. The biggest benefit so far has been my ability to stand straighter because my back and core muscles are getting stronger!

If you have neck pain, Pilates may be the perfect exercise method for you!

Do you have chronic neck pain, limited range of movement in your neck, fused cervical vertebrae or other neck issues? The Pilates Method of exercise may be the perfect form of exercise for you.stiff-neck-1

Often times people with neck problems give up exercise all together because popular exercises can exaggerate their pain and leave them frustrated without seeing any results.

If you are someone who has been dealing with neck pain or problems -know that just one session with a qualified Pilates instructor, may change your views of exercise completely.

The Pilates method of exercise is a total body exercise that works the entire body and is completely adaptable. Exercises can be designed to create strength, balance and flexibility in your body without causing more pain in your neck.

In fact, many clients find that their Pilates practice helps them create balance in their body which reduces neck discomfort and leaves them feeling an overall sense of well being. By concentrating on specific movements and breath, the Pilates Method of exercise is great stress relief as well.

If you are interested in trying out the Pilates method of exercise here are a few quick tips:

1.  Ask about your instructor’s background, teacher training and their experience working with your specific issues to help you find an instructor who is a good fit for you.

2.  Make sure you fill out your health form completely and keep your instructor informed on how exercises feel in your body. Your feedback will help your instructor fine tune exercises so you get the most benefit in your body.

3.  Start off with private sessions.  Although private sessions are more expensive than group classes, they are essential especially if you have physical pain or are overcoming an injury or chronic problem.  Private sessions will allow you to learn the method specific to your body so that you are able to get the maximum benefits and not aggravate any existing conditions.

4.  If you want to work into group classes just let your instructor know.  Your instructor can teach and prepare you to learn how to modify exercises for your body so that you can safely and easily integrate into small group classes.  Your instructor can also give you suggestions on which type of class might be the best fit for you.

5.  Talk to your health care providers(doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor, etc.) and let them know what you are doing.  Most Pilates instructors welcome the chance to work together with health providers when planning your Pilates sessions.

Top 5 things to NOT expect at your Pilates session!

Thinking of trying out Pilates or maybe just getting back into the studio after not practicing Pilates for awhile?  Here’s our list of the top 5 things NOT to expect during your Pilates session!IMG_3026

1.  Don’t expect to feel bad about not exercising or not being in as good of shape as you think you should be.  It happens to everyone and we will help you realize that getting back into shape is easier than you think.

2. Don’t expect to be so sore that you can’t walk down the stairs or lift your arm to brush your hair.  We know that exercise does not need to leave you in pain to be effective.  You can expect to get a great workout that is perfect for your body!

3.  Don’t expect to do the same exact thing every session.  Each class or session is designed to meet your needs on any given day and those needs are constantly changing. Expect us to tailor your exercises to your body and continually challenge you with new variations and movements.

4.  Don’t expect to be able to do everything perfect the first session or even your 100th session.  (I know….this one is hard for most of us and especially if you tend to be a perfectionist!!) Pilates is designed to safely challenge your body and your mind so that you can continue to evolve to the best you!

Try not to be so judgmental toward yourself and KNOW that the benefits of Pilates are more dependent on you doing it on a regular basis rather than how perfectly you do it!

5.  Don’t expect to dread coming in to the studio to exercise.  In fact- most of our clients look forward to coming in!  (this may be hard to believe if you have always been a person who just doesn’t like to exercise- you’ll have to trust us on this one!)

Move Like a Kid Again!

Take a moment and remember back to when you were a child.

You didn’t think about running, playing, and jumping- you just did it! Climbing a tree, jumping off the bed and scrambling over the top of the monkey bars was just something you did.

You did it because it was fun, maybe it was a little bit of a challenge and you didn’t have a fear of not being able to do it.

One of the things I love about the Pilates method of movement is its playful nature!  There is something quite fun about rolling like a ball through your spine. (Check out the video I took about a year ago of two of my kiddos playing at the studio!)  Or how about hanging from the Cadillac:

There is also something quite satisfying about challenging yourself and doing something you would have never dreamed of.
